Lessons from St. Bernard 6th and 7th Grade Visit

We had the opportunity to give a tour and provide mini lessons to the sixth and seventh graders from St. Bernard Catholic School. While the day itself went fast and quite smoothly, I ran into a couple hiccups along the way. Walking these students around campus was a job that seemed to be simple but turned out to be a huge learning experience for me. I had to juggle time management, focus, and interest all while speaking loudly and clearly. At times it felt overwhelming which made me feel like it was a very complicated task. For those moments I wish I would have been better prepared for. This is one of the many takeaways I will take from this visit. While we can’t always plan out every single detail of each and every day, I have learned how important it is to thoughtfully think through agendas and lesson plans. This would have allowed me to feel more confident and overall be more clear for the students. At other times I often felt confident especially when I saw the student’s eyes light up when talking about their interests and future plans. You could see them thinking about the millions of career choices and the places it could take them. There is always room for improvement and personally I want to be more confident with my voice. There were times where I could tell I wasn’t clear in my words and what I was saying. While this comes with being better prepared and simply more practice, I want the information I am sharing with the students to be more clear and easy for them to understand.
