Core Beliefs
In my mind the purpose of teaching and learning is to give guidance for students so that we help prepare them for their future. The guidance that we give students includes teaching them important social skills, caring for and understanding them, and most importantly shaping them into good human beings. I also believe that these skills can be developed through time spent in the classroom. In this time, students learn important social skills and build a sense of community with their classmates. To today’s children, education truly matters because it’s so important to learn critical thinking skills. Especially when a lot of things in the world can so easily be believed.
When it comes to students learning it’s important to understand that teaching the kids how to learn is much more impactful than just learning something. Giving students the ability to persevere and problem solve when the teachers aren’t always around can make student’s learning so much more powerful. Another important role of an educator is to provide new experiences for their students in a safe environment. By giving students a different view on the world, educators show that the world is a bigger place that what they previously know of. An education where students act as a community by working together provides students with better social skills where they can learn to listen and respect other’s thoughts and words.
Teaching Style and Practices
I think a classroom should be both a place for quiet concentration and sociable collaboration. Students should get a glimpse of working alone so they can build independence. The independent work gives the teachers a better sense of where the students are in their lessons and if they need more or less help with it. On the other hand, by giving the students more collaborative work they can bounce new ideas between each other and build important social skills. Finding ways to engage your students means that you care for them. Similar to my answer above I believe that a great educator incorporates multiple strategies of learning. These include play-based learning, hands-on practice, debate and discussion, problem-solving, and project-based learning. In play-based learning, students find an engaging activity that can help them better understood their learning through interest and problem solving techniques. With hands-on practice, a different approach to education can be taken. Rather than simply reading or listening, teachers use a hands-on activity that encourages active participation in lessons. When it comes to debate and discussion, this style of teaching encourages a collaborative approach to a lesson where students work together and explore different perspectives and opinions of other students. Problem-solving learning encourages, similarly to debate and discussion learning, collaborative work and builds critical thinking. At other times problem-solving learning can build independence skills too. Lastly, in project-based learning students can be put to the test by working together with others at long periods to develop and understand roles and collaborative work. Like I mentioned before, a great educator will incorporate all these styles of learning in order to meet the needs of their students. Building different styles into lessons can make class much more engaging for some students and that is why it’s so important to use all different types of styles.
